Now that my time in Parma is coming to a close, I’d like to take a moment to reflect back on what I’ve experienced at the Palazzo della Pilotta. I’m truly thankful for having had the opportunity to be a part of the “Digital Pilotta” project and to collaborate with the other interns. It was an eye-opening experience for me, and a big part of it is because before coming to Parma, I didn’t know a word of Italian nor did I know that so much of the Italian language would be integrated into my day to day activities. My initial goal before participating in my study abroad program was to see as much European/Italian art as possible and to build on my existing knowledge of various art periods in history. Interning at the Pilotta has fulfilled part of that wish. Additionally, my biggest worry before and during the program was definitely the language barrier. 3 months of collaborating with the team (mostly observing on my part), has allowed me to grow and I am now a better communicator, listener, and critical thinker simply because I have persevered through the barriers. It wasn’t easy, but with anything in life, the most rewarding moments are the ones that have challenged and pushed you out of your comfort zone, in ways you never thought it could. With that being said, I am grateful to have been given the chance to apply some of my skills and to be given a “behind the scenes” look into the museum’s complex operation. I would also like to thank Cristina for her time and inviting me join the project on short notice. Goodbye Parma! You will be missed.
